Feedback

we explained our ideas to the rest of the class and showed them our logo and everything else we have done so far and the feedback we got was that our logo looked profesional but our ideas needed some development before we could go ahead with the filming because we were not very clear of which idea we are going to use. They liked our idea of how to do the credits because it was different and interesting.

Six Feet under

we watched the beginning of six feet under and we really like the way the credits are presented there is a fluency between each shot the credits are diagetic and therfore are placed in the action of the filming for example a tag with the directors name hanging off the characters toe. we think that this kind of credits is very interesting because it is unlikely to find a film that has credits like this and there is something to watch aswell as looking at the names therefore the audience are more likely to pay attention and tend to carry on watching. We would like to achieve something like this technique to make our credits interesting but it may be difficult for us due to the time we have and our budget.

preliminary excercise

The preliminary task went well, all the shots were well planned and were presented clearly. We shared the roles around the group allowing everyone to contribute to the camera work and acting. We were unable to have actors however switching roles around helps us be more fair. We completed all the shots we needed to do, in an ideal location of inside a empty corridor. We had no problems with the weather etc. We feel the preliminary task when very well and was overall quite good but when we do our filming for our thriller we think it would be sensible to organise actors that could star in our film instead of using members of our group because it is going to be a much harder task than the preliminary task and we will need every member focusing on the camera work and directing.

Plans for the Thriller Opening.

Our ideas for a Thriller Opening is that we don't want to give to much away in the opening or have a death that is shown as this relates to much to a horror.

We haven't decided which idea we prefer. Ones a action thriller and one is more psychological thriller.

Idea one: This is more of an action thriller. But it starts off with a dark setting and a person hiding. The person hiding is looking through a small gap, outside the dark setting is people saying where is she. The person hiding is heavy breathing. Then flicks back into the past, and it starts to tell the story. The Camera starts off with a dark setting with the close up of the main characters face, with them looking out of a tiny hole from where the character is hiding. The camera then focuses on the action outside where people come into a room, where there is dialogue asking where she is, the camera could have a long shot as the character is looking through the hole. The camera could be fast paced as it relates to the action. The music could be fast paced as well to match up with the action. The Editing wouldn't include any dissolves or anything as sharp cutting would be more effective. but this could possibly tell the story too much in the time that we have but this is what the opening sequence would be based on.

Idea two:
It starts with a police station and an interview room and you see two girls getting interviewed about a death, then you have flash backs of the girls all getting ready for a night out and then, them walking down the street in a busy town area. You then see two of the girls looking for the other one who has gone missing. The use of camera in the opening sequence could start off slow in the police station as the character are talking, could use a mid-shot. it could flick back a forth to which character was talking or to the group of girls so it shows the emotion. When they are talking about what happening in the flashback the camera goes into a hand held mode, as this is evidence at the police station. When the girls are in the busy town it then goes back to a steady camera and its fast paced towards the girls and then it goes black and the opening credits start. but it could be difficult to make a police station set and we would probly not be allowed access to a actual police station.

idea3

another idea would be to base the filming on one of the two ideas above but not to actually tell a story but instead just hint at whats going on by just using filming and sound which may make the opening sequences e.g in the butterfly effect there is no conversation until about 2.30minutes in and also in vertigo there is no speech until about 2.45 into the film. The story is not normally told at all there is always an element of mystery to the story that the audience either has to think about and work out or watch on more to find out. I think this would be a good way to tell one of these stories because the sound can tell a lot from filming, you don't even need dialogue which just makes what is going on so obvious like ''where is she'' we could show with filming and sound that her friends are looking for her which would make the opening sequence more interesting.

Idea Four
Another idea could be a girl who has flashbacks all the time, because she nearly drowned. She sees into the past to try and change things as an effect. As a child she has bad experiences for example, her dad leaves, her mum gets a horrible boyfriend and hes abusive towards the mum. Her brother gets into a lot of trouble with drugs and gangs. She helps others to sort their problems out by going back into the past and changing events. This then makes her life and others perfect but then she comes through different consequences. In the opening sequence you will see her on a hospital with blood and then you see a flashback of her in the car when it has crashed. The screen goes black and then the title of the film comes out of her mouth whilst shes screaming.

This is a Jerry Bruckheimer production logo. He has many successes in action and drama genres. This logo gives the impression that it is going to be dark film as it is a dark setting with a lonely setting with a tree, that lightening bolt hitting the tree.

Production Logo

This is a Warner Brothers production logo. Warner Brothers have been known for TV animations and films.

Warner Brothers have done family films but also action type films. They cover a wide audience. By the logo you think that it is going to be a family film because its bright and colourful but it has also been used for more thriller, action, comedy and horror type films.

Alfred Hitchcock Essay "What thriller thrive" 1936

The audience wants to feel involved in the Thriller but not enough to feel threatened. They want to feel the tension and suspense, with out anything actually happening. The audience can leave the cinema with assurance and safety. At the end of the film it is always resolved, so the audience can relax. One quote from the essay is 'A thriller must be wholehearted-the more exciting the better. And that is why the authentic thriller will live and thrive and the horror film will die' this is basically saying that the thriller is and will be more popular.

Thriller Analysis

We think that this is a very good, but we think that it does not fit in the thriller genre but instead falls into the horror genre because of the gore. It dies have some thriller conventions though, like the eye that is broken up from the rest of her body and you only see her eye which you can see is really panicked and scared. Never shows the full identity of the person.

Butterfly effect

The Butterfly Effect

In the opening of the film there is a quote from the chaos theory. giving a explanation of the Butterfly Effect. The film starts in the future and then goes back into the past throughout the film. When the title comes up there are butterflies flying through the title. The butterfly turns into a brain and makes you wonder why. The music is non-diegetic, it's repetitive to build tension and reflects movement of the character drums etc.

Thriller Analysis

Vertigo Opening - 1958 Alfred Hitchcock
Vertigo is having a fear of falling.

Repetitive Non Diegetic Sound, Jumpy and mysterious. Spinning Symbols to make you feel like your falling. Identity slightly shown but not given away so it gives the view questions, womans body parts are broken, mainly focuses on her eyes, this is because the eyes show emotion.
